3 Incentive Ideas for SMS Marketing
If you're reading this, you're subscribed (or following) me—which is awesome! I can't believe I can share knowledge with you directly like this.
🤫 Shh...don't tell your competitors, but text messages are a great way to connect directly with your customers. Here are a few reasons:
- Sending a text is illegal: if customers don't sign up for your list and text them, you violate the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).
- It's forever: having a list of subscribers doesn't restrict you to social media platforms or algorithms to send your message.
- A 98% open rate: It's a great way to ensure your customers see your message.
But you need them to sign up first!
This week, let's examine three ideas for getting customers to sign up for your text list.
But first...are you considering texting customers? I use Slick Text for over 700 subscribers.

#1: Free Gift: Send Them Something!
Everyone loves free things, especially if they are already buying from you. For e-commerce brands, once your customer hits that cart checkout page, offer them a "gift" offer to get your texts to send with their current order.
Some examples:
- "Before we package this up, can we add a gift too? Sign up for our texts for this free [item] in your shipment!"
- "We love free shipping, but we love free shipping + free gifts. Get yours by signing up for our texts."
- "Can we get your number? Why? We want to send you a free surprise!"
This option is hard for service-based companies, but some ideas you can include are a "free logo design" or "free website audit."
PRO TIP: Include the value (i.e. $99) with your promo too! This helps your customer "see" how much you value their phone number being added.
#2: Discounts or Free Shipping
This is a great option for e-commerce, similar to gifts, but you can offer this in a few ways:
- Offer a discount on a website visit. If you can provide a discount or offer free shipping from the beginning, this can help trigger a sale.
- Have a popup during the checkout process. This is a great option for users to add more items to their cart.
You can provide discounts for service companies when customers sign up for "service specials" or announcements.
PRO TIP: When using discounts, ensure the "juice is worth the squeeze" with a high enough offer of 15-25% off.

#3: Join A Loyalty Program with Perks
This is a great option for service and brick-and-mortar businesses looking to establish a customer base that will continue to use their company.
Create a loyalty program that gives your customers points, tracks them, and allows them to cash in (you can do this with Slick Text*).
Incentivizing customers to sign up and get discounts or gifts as they move up the loyalty board can be a great way to grow your list.
Keep this in mind...
Your text offers should include something that is of value to your customers. They are "giving you" their number and access to contact them anytime.
Respect times of day, holidays, and the frequency with which you contact them.
