Hey Reader,
I'm not one to "build in public," but I am... kind of. I'm working on launching siterevue.com, a service that will help business owners, creators, and everyone in between have an unbiased opinionon their site or landing page.
Those of you who have been following my story for some time may know that I once had an Instagram brand that garnered over 86,000 followers, which I sold earlier this year.
But recently, the platform has lost its allure for me.
I was an Instagram addict.
For years, I posted daily stories, created digital products for Instagram growth, organized dozens of meetups with hundreds of people, attended over 40 free events as an influencer, and even made friends through the app.
I LOVED Instagram.
I would scroll for over an hour a day or over 15 days a year!
On the other hand I have Facebook, the necessary evil.
Because Facebook owns Instagram, it's a necessity to have it, but I was never a power-user like I was for Instagram.
However, I have found myself getting sucked into the feed there too.
Minimizing my scroll time
We've all been there, whether on social media, a news site, binging a Netflix series, or driving by a fender bender - we can't look away!
While may want to, the curious human mind doesn't allow us.
That's when technology comes in to help!
I turned on app restrictions to only 15-min a day.
This past week I decided it would be more important for me to be more present every day and find something else to spend those other 45 minutes on.
Like working out.
Or working on my startup (cue the beginning of this email!).
Now granted it's still early and I just started, but I do see some benefits in limiting these apps on my device.
3 Takeaways from my app limits
My boredom has turned into production. I was continually just opening up my phone to scroll - for what? To share a funny reel? To see more ads? I create ads all day, I didn't want to see more of them.
My phone battery has improved. I'm running on an iPhone 14 Pro so the battery life has depleted the last year or so. But with these limitations I've noticed my battery is lasting longer because I'm not scrolling and loading more videos, more audio, more ads.
I'm looking at my wife more. Because my head isn't down looking at my phone as much, I'm making more eye contact with my wife when we have conversations. I'm listening to her intently.
Try it for yourself.
I know for some, mindlessly scrolling is a way to decompress but it could also be preventing you from applying more positive things in your life.
If you happen to take a stab at it, let me know how it goes!
